The O’s played the Cleveland Indians yesterday with a 9-6 score, ending in a loss. The Indian’s Martinez scored in the second inning, and Peralta was thrown out at his third attempt to advance on a play. During the third inning, Hernandez doubled to the right while Millar, Patterson, and Tejada scored. This put the O’s in the lead with a score of 3-1. From the fourth to eighth inning only the Indians scored 8 runs, making the score 9-3. Cleveland’s Nixon drove in four runs and scored twice, and Sabathia was unbeaten except for allowing nine hits Sunday night.
Nixon was signed as a free agent in January after he had spent his entire career with the Red Sox. His RBI was at .320, which is the second best on the team behind Martinez. Nixon was 1 for 15 against left-handed pitchers this season before he got two hits each against Burres and Birkins. Nixon stated, "I was just fortunate to have the kind of day that I did today. I found the holes when I needed to. Having those kind of at-bats, it's a morale booster. The biggest thing for us is just winning the ballgame. We lost two games in a row here. Most of the time, I face lefties who come out of the bullpen, and those guys are not very fun. You get an opportunity to face guys who are starters, it seems like it's a little bit different out there”.
However, in the eighth inning, Nick Markakis hit to the left while Huff scored. Also in the eighth inning, Millar singled to the leftfield and Melvin Mora scored. Thus making the score 9-5, and in the ninth inning, Hernandez singled to the left field and Brian Roberts score. So the final score of the game was 9-6 with the Cleveland Indians winning.
