O's lose to Detroit Tigers

On Tuesday, May 1st, the O’s had an upsetting lost to the Detroit Tigers with a final score of 5-4. Detroit’s pitcher, Sean Casey was just getting over the flu, and wasn’t doing too well in April. The Reliever, Joel Zumaya pitched for two innings, and he struck out four, and only allowed one hit. He has also been struggling recently, but this was his second consecutive appearance. Todd Jones was the pitcher for the ninth inning. One of the Tigers’ starters, Chad Durbin, only lasted 3 innings, and he allowed two runs and three hits, but he walked six. The Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland stated, “This was a lucky game for us, to walk that many guys.” Adam Loewen, an Oriole’s starter had three runs and seven hits within five innings. The O’s had a lead in the beginning of the third inning with 1-0 thanks to Melvin Mora’s fourth homer of the season. Oriole’s Hernandez then grounded out to shortstop when Nick Markakis scored, and Miguel Tejada went to third making the score 2-0. In the 5th inning, Detroit’s Polanco singled to the center field when Rodriguez scored. Detroit’s Monroe had a homerun and hit the ball to left, and Polanco scored, giving Detroit the lead with a score of 2-3. However, the Oriole’s tied the game in the seventh inning to 3-3 with Miguel Tejada’s single to the center where Melvin Mora scored, and Markakis went to second base. Then in the 8th inning Tigers’ Casey singled to the left, and Guillen scored when Granderson went to second. Also in the 8th inning, Granderson scored, and Casey went the third. Baltimore manager, Sam Perlozzo stated, “We had chances early to put it away, but couldn’t, we then had to battle all night. We need someone to come through with the big hits to extend the lead. We just haven’t been able to do that”. Starter, Brian Roberts scored on a ground out by Tejada, and Markakis made it to third, making the final score of 5-4 in the ninth inning. This was a tough game for the Oriole’s, but they should’ve won it.
